Hans Obkircher (28.11.1939 Fiè allo Sciliar -13.02.2021 Merano) received his first piano lessons from the local priest at the age of 7 and was the organist in Völser Aicha at the age of 11.
His studies took him first to the Claudio Monteverdi Conservatory in Bolzano, where he obtained the diploma in clarinet in 1961. In addition, he continued his education at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. Professor Hans Swarowsky instructed him as a conductor.
As one of the founders of the music schools of the province of South Tyrol, Hans Obkircher first worked as a teacher, later as director of the Merano Music School and, until his retirement, as an inspector at the Institute for Music Education. In 1963 he founded the Orchester der Musikfreunde Meran (Orchestra of the Friends of Music Merano), which he directed for 36 years. His intention was to enable amateur musicians to participate in an orchestra. His cooperation with young instrumental and vocal soloists from the country and South Tyrolean choirs was considered exemplary. To this day, unforgettable concert evenings for orchestra and audience were the result of this work. In addition, he helped shape the training of conductors in the Verband Südtiroler Musikkapellen (VSM – Association of South Tyrolean Wind Orchestras) and in Emilia Romagna.
In South Tyrol, Hans Obkircher was active as conductor of the wind orchestras Völser Aicha, Obermais, Untermais and Lana. He was a juror at numerous competitions and a highly requested composer and arranger for a wide variety of instrumentations and styles, but mainly for woodwinds. He has orchestrated the wind music edition for the diocesan part of the new Gotteslob (Diocese of Bolzano-Bressanone), which is published by Musikverlag Abel in 2019.
