1 June 2023 marked the 750th anniversary of the death of Egno of Eppan. Bishop Egno was the last legitimate member of his noble family. The Counts of Eppan died out with him in 1273.

The short festive music for brass band entitled EGNO VON EPPAN, written by Gottfried Veit, aims to immerse the listener in the Middle Ages with two main elements. On the one hand, the beginning of the main theme of the high brass instruments undoubtedly has a “Renaissance character” and, on the other hand, the composition is introduced by two field drums (lansquenets or Landsknecht drums), i.e. historical percussion instruments. The two players of these membranophones begin the composition by alternately striding through the hall. They only drum together from the moment the brass band’s “tutti” begins. The main part of the work is then characterised by fanfare blasts from the high brass instruments. This is followed by a calm middle section in the “Moderato religioso”, which is intoned in the first twelve bars by a flugelhorn solo, which is then taken up by the ensemble in the semi-plenum. Tubular bells emphasise the religious background of this section. The return of the main section in “Tempo primo” creates a three-part song form. This is finally supplemented by a few final confirmations in the “Grandioso”, which offer all the sonorities of a brass band.
