SoBrass
“Sobrass” is a work composed for solo soprano saxophone and wind orchestra that attempts to weave together the tonal differences of the graceful woodwind instrument with the weight, fullness and versatility of a modern wind orchestra.
The piece is divided into several sections. In each of these sections, the solo instrument and orchestra draw closer and then separate, play around each other and connect in different ways, without losing their respective independence and identity. At first cautiously and at a distance; then with a euphoric, childlike joy; then to become lost in thought again. After a period of calm, the tension slowly but steadily builds up once more: and, after a mutual call and response, it returns to the powerful, resplendent main part.
Originally composed for a pure brass ensemble, in 2017 Johann Finatzer finally arranged “Sobrass” for wind orchestra. This version received its world premiere at the concert of the Musikkapelle St. Pauls, held in March 2017 under the direction of the arranger.
The composer himself assumed the solo part at the premiere.
